OCCC

2007 Individual Penny Search

In December 2007, one of the OCCC members decided to conduct his own, personal penny search.  The intent was to determine how many of the older, copper cents could be found in general population (compared to the current "zinc" cents), and also to see what older cents could be found. Every 3-4 days he would acquire 10 cent rolls from area banks, search the contents and record the findings. The search continued for approximately 3 months and eventually over 35,000 cents were examined and recorded. Below are some of the notable findings.

  • Over 35,000 cents were searched and categorized
  • Over 70% of cents are the newer "zinc" variety (1982 - present)
  • 173 "Wheatie" cents (1909 - 1958)  were found
  • No 1945 "Steelie" cents were found
  • 1 Indian Head (1859 - 1909) cent was found

The table below shows the summarized findings. The actual 2007 Individual Penny Search Summary Spreadsheet includes more detail on the collection and search findings.
